BIOGRAPHY

Djo Dama is a rapper from the band "TATAPOUND":

The name "Tatapound" is made up of two words 'tata' and 'pound'. 'Tata' dates back to precolonial Mali when it was the name given to the city wall that protected the town of Sikasso (in the south of Mali) from invaders, both African and European.

The Tata wall was seven metres high and three metres thick. The choice of using the name 'Tata' came about because the band's members (who are all Malians) were all struck by this story while they were at school. The story relates to Mali's most glorious historical era.

The choice also reflects the rappers desire to show their allegiance to their continent and to Mali in particular; by choosing a name with vestiges of glory attached, they wish to point to a future that can be just as glorious. So in short, 'Tata' signifies the serious, intellectual and 'afro optimistic' side of the group.

'Pound' originates from the English language and represents the British currency. The word is intended to represent the party feel of some of the songs and so the fun side of Tatapound.

The group is made up of three rappers: - Adama Mamadou Diarra, known as Djo Dama : a former Masters student at the Socio-Anthropological University in Bamako.
- Sidy Soumaoro, known as Ramses : A former Masters student in Planning.
- Mahamadou Dicko, known as Dixon : A former Bachelors student in Advanced Mathematics.

These three rappers have a lot in common: they were childhood friends, all growing up in the same area of the city (Badalabougou district in Bamako); they all share the same passion for rap music and share similar sources of inspiration for their music: the street, historical and scientific writings and reggae and rap music. Amongst their favourite artists are: Barrington Levy, Bob Marley, IAM, Tupac, Salif Keita and Public Enemy. The band was formed in 1995 following a rap competition. Their manager's name is Mamani Samassékou, known as Abba, and they have a stage manager named Balla Gueye.
